Beatty: Civil rights center land purchase marks progress, bond presents opportunity

June 25, 2026

Oklahoma has a rich  history, though much of it is relatively unknown to the larger public. The forthcoming , a  project, will change that.

The Center will commemorate the legacy of  and highlight the role Oklahomans played in the national movement for civil rights. Through programming and exhibits, we will tell the story of Oklahoma’s civil rights history to honor the past, enlighten visitors and empower the next generation of leaders.

This summer, the  Urban Renewal Authority () sold the land slated for the construction of the Civil Rights Center to the City of OKC. OCURA is the leading public redevelopment agency of OKC, and we are grateful to work with both the City and the Authority to bring this new cultural institution to life.
